Why is Self-Love so Important?

Updated: Feb 27, 2021

In today’s society self-love is talked about and promoted more than ever before. There are so many shops selling little ‘self-help’ books, and it’s hard to scroll through Instagram or Facebook without seeing a motivational post telling us to look after ourselves. But what is self-love, and why is it so important?

Self-love is all about setting aside some time to look after yourself, whether that be mentally, physically or both. This could consist of a nice little pamper night, where you treat yourself to a warm bath, facemask and read your favourite book. Or it could perhaps take the form of a 20-minute yoga session. Doesn’t self-love sound fun?! You can do anything that brings you the most joy and peace, as long as it’s something you’re doing for you. It’s a moment where you can allow yourself to be at least a little bit selfish.

However, there is more to self-love than just finding some time to finish the latest season of Grey’s Anatomy! It’s about trying to clear your head, fully relax, and centre your mind and body. Now more than ever there are so many pressures put on us, whether that is through work, social media, or in our personal lives, and it can all get very overwhelming if you don’t allow yourself a break. Mental health issues have been more prevalent than ever before, and self-love is something that has been shown to help people who suffer with depression and anxiety to be better able to cope with the feelings they’re enduring.

Even if you have a busy schedule, there is always time to fit in some self-care. It could be something as quick as a 5-minute meditation in the car after dropping the kids off at school, or it could mean waking up 10 minutes earlier to do some yoga before the chaos of the day unfolds. Simply taking this small amount of time to breathe, sit with your thoughts and allow yourself to overthink, or not think at all, can make such a positive impact on your mental health. Practicing some self-care in the mornings is actually such a great idea, as this can then help you to embark on the rest of the day with a clear, focused mindset!

Breathe, meditate, relax and help ease some of the stress weighing on your mind caused from the busy world of today.
